What Is a Luxated Lens?

A luxated lens is an eye disorder in which the lens becomes detached. This can happen because of an injury or for other reasons. This is a serious eye health condition that needs immediate attention. The sooner a veterinary ophthalmology specialist can intervene, the greater chance you have of saving your pet’s vision.

If left untreated, this condition can lead to persistent glaucoma, retinal detachment, and even blindness.

How Does a Lens Luxation Happen?

A lens can become luxated for a few different reasons.

Primary Lens Luxation is caused by an inherited defect in the animal. It is often seen in terrier dog breeds, but can also manifest in Australian Cattle Dogs, Border Collies, and Shar-Peis.

Secondary Lens Luxation happens when another primary eye disorder is present such as glaucoma, a tumor, an injury or trauma to the eye.

Symptoms

You should look for the following symptoms in your pet:

  • Changes in the eye
  • Changes in the pupil
  • Eye inflammation
  • Eye clouding
  • Pain
  • Squinting
  • Tearing

Treatment

If your animal is showing any of the signs above, have him seen by our vet and possibly a pet eye doctor. Our professional will be able to perform a luxated lens removal. In most cases, your pet will need to have a surgical procedure in order to correct the luxated lens. Your pet may need follow-up treatment as well to monitor its recovery.
